Uruguay officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, (sometimes the Eastern Republic of Uruguay), Spanish: República Oriental del Uruguay - is a country located in the south eastern part of South America. An estimated 88% of the population are of European descent. Uruguay's only land border is with Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to the north. To the west lie the Uruguay River and to the southwest lies the estuary of Río de la Plata with Argentina only a short commute across the banks of either of these bodies of water, while to the southeast lies the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. Uruguay, with an area of approximately 176,000 square kilometres (68,000 sq mi), is the second-smallest nation of South America in area after Suriname. The coat of arms of Uruguay was first adopted by law on March 19, 1829. It consists of an oval, which is divided into four equal sections and crowned by a rising golden sun, the “Sun of May”, symbolising the rising of the Uruguayan nation. The oval is surrounded by two a laurel branch on the left and a olive one on the right, representing honour and peace, joined at the bottom by a blue ribbon. In the upper left quarter there is a scale, symbol of equality and justice, set on a blue background. The upper right quarter contains the Cerro de Montevideo (Montevideo Hill) with its fortress on the summit, which represents strength, on a silver background. In the lower left, also on a silver background, there is a galloping horse, symbolising liberty. The lower right quarter holds an ox, which is a symbol of abundance, on a blue background.
