It works within the Coast Guard in carrying out its noncombatant and non-law enforcement missions. The Coast Guard has assigned primary responsibility for many recreational boating safety tasks to the Auxiliary, including public boating safety education and voluntary vessel safety checks. Prior to 1997, Auxiliarists were limited to those tasks and on-water patrols supporting recreational boating safety. In 1997, however, new legislation authorised the Auxiliary to participate in any and all Coast Guard missions except direct military and direct law enforcement.
