This elegant Van Gogh "Vase with Three Sunflowers" (1888) fine-tip blue/black ink ballpoint pen features the gorgeous golden yellow sunflowers against the pale blue background. The 14 flowers on a blue background (now in Munich) and the 15 blooms on a yellow background are the two most well-known of the latter two (in London). Vincent provided Theo with a brief description of the image: "3 huge flowers in a green vase, light background." The leftmost flower is as large as the pot, which is a beautiful example of the blossoms' sheer grandeur. He painted the flowers against a vibrant turquoise background instead of the sombre backgrounds that generally accompanied his early still life works from Paris.
