This oil on canvas from 1889, painted while Van Gogh was at the Saint-Remy asylum, is a copy of a painting by Eugene Delacroix showing the Pieta, or dead Christ, with the Virgin Mary behind him in mourning. Because Van Gogh was at the asylum when this was painted, the red hair he gave Christ to match his own is thought to represent the pain and suffering he was experiencing in his own life.
