Van Gogh said he wanted to depict peasants as they really were. He deliberately chose coarse and ugly models, thinking that they would be natural and unspoiled in his finished work. Potato Eaters depicts a family of farmers sitting around a table eating dinner. About the artist: Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Post Impressionist painter whose work was most noteable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty, and bold colour.
