Flowers in a Vase with Shells and Insects (c. 1630) by Balthasar van der Ast is a vintage fine art baroque floral still life painting. A bouquet of garden flowers featuring tulips, irises, roses, snapdragons and peonies in a vase with seashells, a butterfly, spiders and a grasshopper. About the Artist: Balthasar van der Ast (1593/94-1657) was a Dutch Golden Age painter who specialised in still lifes of flowers, fruit and seashells. He is considered to be a pioneer in the genre of shell painting and his still lifes often contained insects and lizards.
