Vintage Common Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) Notebook

Look at this thing. Crataegus monogyna. The Common Hawthorn. Don't let the word "common" fool you. This is the absolute brute of the hedgerow, brilliantly masquerading as a delicate beauty. It’s a card-carrying member of the rose family (Rosaceae). But while your pampered garden roses are demanding precise soil pH and wilting over a bit of greenfly, the hawthorn is out on a freezing hillside, armed with bone-piercing thorns, entirely unbothered by the weather. The cover bears a splendidly accurate vintage illustration of the plant in its more polite phases. You’ve got those deeply lobed leaves. The clusters of white spring blossoms—which, fun botanical fact, emit a chemical called trimethylamine. It smells vaguely of rotting fish to attract confused carrion flies for pollination. Nature is wonderfully weird. Don't panic, the notebook itself just smells like fresh paper and possibility. And then there are the red autumn "haws." Thrushes and waxwings go absolutely mad for them.
