Vintage - Mermaid Queen of the Fishes,
A vintage book illustration by Henry Justice Ford from a story in the 1906 book by Andrew Lang titled "The Orange Fairy." The illustration is captioned, "The crown returns to the queen of the fishes." It depicts a beautiful mermaid with a crown on her head. She is underwater as schools of fish swim around her. The English artist and illustrator, Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941) often signed his work H. J. Ford. He first became well known for his illustrations for 25 collections of Andrew Lang’s fairy books which sold worldwide in the 1880s and 1890s. Lang titled his books using colours such as “The Red Fairy” and “The Green Fairy.” Ford also exhibited landscapes and paintings of historical subjects at the Royal Academy of Art.
