Paul Gauguin Flowers and Cats - Created in 1899 - Paul Gauguin (1848 –1903) was a prominent French post-Impressionist painter. His experimental use of colour and style were distinct and unlike Impressionism – it would later inspire a group of artists. Gauguin’s work greatly inspired the French avant-garde and fauvism, an early 20th-century movement in painting that was started about 1905 by a group of French artists including Henri Matisse. This movement embodied the use of simple forms and bright colours. It was only after his death in 1903 that Gauguin’s work was treasured and he gained recognised for his exploratory use of colour and style.
