Established in 1943, the Staples Tuition Grants program has been providing tuition assistance to Staples High School seniors and alumni with demonstrated financial need. Our first STG recipient, David Hughes, attended Harvard University and upon his retirement was the Harvard University Fanny Peabody Mason Professor of Music.
In 2016, STG is awarding $300,000 in grants to 115 students, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per student.
Grants are awarded based on financial need criteria similar to those used by federal aid programs. Although STG’s criteria are based solely on financial need, the grant recipients have also distinguished themselves during their time at Staples by their academic, artistic, or athletic achievements; involvement in the community; dedication to work or a commitment to family. These young men and women possess an unyielding desire to learn and the strength of character needed to make the most of their education. We wish them the very best in their pursuits.
Please consider purchasing one or more vintage Westport items to support these kids and help with STG's fundraising goals. The royalties from your purchase will go towards the Chou Chou Merrill Award which was created by her loving family after her death in 2014. Chou Chou, a 1970 graduate of Staples High School, loved everything about Westport, particularly Compo Beach, Longshore, and Main Street.
