Virgin and Child with Saint Rose of Viterbo (1670) by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo Rose of Viterbo, T.O.S.F., was a young woman born in Viterbo, At the age of 10, she became a Secular Franciscan and began preaching in the streets about sin and the sufferings of Jesus. She spent her brief life as a recluse, she was outspoken in her support of the papacy. Rose secured the conversion of all, even of the sorceress, by standing unscathed for three hours in the flames of a burning pyre, (a structure made of wood used for burning a body as part of an execution), a miracle as striking as it is well attested.
