Established in 1925, Virunga National Park is Africa's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site of unparalleled biodiversity. It covers a vast range of habitats from the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and active volcanoes like Nyiragongo to dense tropical forests, papyrus swamps, and savannas. The park is most famous as one of the few remaining strongholds for the critically endangered mountain gorilla, which lives within its montane forests. It is also home to other rare species including chimpanzees, okapis, and elephants, and boasts a higher diversity of birds, mammals, and reptiles than any other protected area on the continent.
