As much fun to photograph as they are to watch! The playful nature of this whale is one of the most enduring qualities about them. This beluga whale was curious and swam right towards the camera. Belugas live in frigid Arctic and sub-Arctic waters, but some belugas migrate south to warmer water during the summer months. Beluga means “white one” in Russian. The beluga whale is also known as the white whale or the sea canary. It is called the “sea canary” because it can make all kinds of whistles and bell-like sounds. They sound like they are singing! The beluga whale is an extremely social animal, so social in fact, they even hunt in pods. There are thought to be approximately 100,000 beluga whales worldwide with the St. Lawrence, Cook Inlet, and Alaskan belugas classified as endangered. The inside of the card is blank.
