The design was produced in four color variations and became highly successful, contributing to the firm's reputation. Despite some initial confusion over its attribution, with some claiming that William Morris, May’s father, was the designer, it is now widely recognized as May's work, first acknowledged as such in a 1909 Morris & Co. catalog.
