WWII Pillbox on the beach, Dutch Harbour, AK Postcard
This pillbox is one of many relics left over from the Campaign of the Aleutians during WWII. The Aleutian Islands were fortified against attack by the Japanese and Unalaska Island became the centre of operations during the campaign. This pillbox was photographed on the western beach of Dutch Harbour, Alaska. Behind it, in the bay of Unalaska, rests Hog Island. Beyond Hog Island lie the Makushin mountains. Similar pillboxes are found in peoples' yards of houses on the north beach of the City of Unalaska, Alaska. It is easiest to leave them in place than to try and have a piece of history removed from the yard.
