This painting shows a youthful Bacchus. Bacchus is also known ad Dionysus, the god of wine. It appears that Bacchus is inviting the viewer to partake of his wine. It is believed that because of the difficulty of holding the wine glass in the weaker left hand, that the model may actually have held it in his right hand and that Caravaggio simply painted with the aid of a mirror.
