It is a a member of the Gizzard shads family and is native to rivers of Australia and southwestern Papua New Guinea. It commonly inhabit streams coursing through relatively dry eucalyptus-scrub or desert areas, preferring sluggish or quiet waters. It feeds on algae, insects and small crustaceans. It can reach a maximum length of 48 cm (18.9 inches).
