The Venus Flytrap, scientific name Dionaea muscipula, is the only member of the genus Dionaea in the sundew family, the Droseraceae. It catches and digests its prey, mostly insects and arachnids, in the trapping structure, which is formed by the terminal part of the plants leaves, and is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces. It is native to coastal North and South Carolina, growing in open bogs. It is also a popular cultivated plant.
