Originally introduced in coastal areas to prevent erosion, it may be surprising to learn that this beautiful grass is on the invasive weed list in California and has been completely banned in New Zealand and Hawaii due to its ability to thrive and take over an area. Each plume produces up to 100,000 seeds that are widely dispersed by the wind and develop without fertilisation. Pampas grass quickly colonises bare ground, but establishment is usually less successful where the seedlings must compete with other grasses. Due to widespread use in coastal areas, many see Pampas grass and think, "Beach". You can be thinking the same in your kitchen or bath.
