This design features the flag of Boston, which is the capital and most populous city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. It is the seat of Suffolk County and the most populous city in New England. The city is the economic and cultural center of a substantially larger metropolitan area known as Greater Boston. The flag of Boston consists of a sky blue field and the seal of the city of Boston, Massachusetts, in the center. It was first designed in 1913 and adopted by Boston City Council in 1917. The motto contained within the seal is made up of the Latin words "Sicut Patribus Sit Deus Nobis", meaning "God be with us as he was with our fathers".
