Clatsop Indians 1855 1869 George Catlin
The Clatsops were a non-nomadic people who were hunters and gatherers. They were a small tribe of about 200 people who spoke Chinook. "Clatsop" means "dried salmon people". The tribe was first reported in 1792 in the journals of Robert Grey.
George Catlin was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveller, who specialised in portraits of Native Americans in the American Frontier. Travelling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. Born: July 26, 1796, Wilkes-Barre, PA Died: December 23, 1872, Jersey City, NJ.
