Yellow and Purple Irises / Yellow and Mauve Irises (Iris jaunes et mauves), 1924-1925 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. Monet returned to irises in the final years of his life, after the earlier 1914-1917 campaign connected with the Grandes Décorations. He had recovered his sight after cataract operations in 1923 and was still completing his great decorative panels. His friend Georges Clemenceau even complained that Monet spent too much time on independant easel paintings like this one. He moved close to the plants and treated them on a large scale, using broad strokes and strong colour contrasts. The flowers remain recognisable, but the garden setting is reduced to very little spatial information. The work belongs to Monet's last sustained exploration of a motif he had cultivated and painted for decades.
