Claude Monet's Étretat Cliffs Tissue Paper
Étretat Cliffs, a masterpiece created by the renowned French Impressionist painter Claude Monet, captures the breathtaking natural beauty of the coastal cliffs in Étretat, Normandy, France. Painted during the late 19th century, Monet's Étretat Cliffs series is a testament to his fascination with capturing the ever-changing effects of light and atmosphere.
In this particular series, Monet portrays the majestic white cliffs that rise dramatically from the turquoise waters of the English Channel. The composition showcases a harmonious blend of land, sea, and sky, with the cliffs serving as the central focus of the paintings. Monet's brushstrokes are vibrant and lively, conveying the raw energy and power of the crashing waves against the cliffs.
The artist's mastery in capturing the nuances of light is evident in his portrayal of the cliffs' surfaces. Monet skilfully depicts the interplay between light and shadow as the sun's rays illuminate the rugged rock formations. Through his distinctive technique of applying short, broken brushstrokes, Monet creates a sense of movement and atmosphere, evoking the transient nature of the scene.
Étretat Cliffs showcases Monet's dedication to plein air painting, where he would set up his easel outdoors to capture the immediate impression of the landscape. This approach allowed him to observe and record the subtle shifts in colour and light as they unfolded before him, resulting in a vivid and dynamic representation of the cliffs.
Monet's Étretat Cliffs series not only captures the visual allure of the natural landscape but also highlights his pioneering role in the Impressionist movement. By focusing on the ephemeral qualities of light and atmosphere, Monet sought to convey the sensory experience of the scene rather than strict realism. Through his bold use of colour and loose brushwork, he invites the viewer to immerse themselves in the energy and beauty of the coastal cliffs.
Today, Monet's Étretat Cliffs series remains an iconic representation of the Impressionist movement and a testament to the enduring allure of nature's grandeur. These paintings continue to captivate art enthusiasts, transporting them to the windswept cliffs of Étretat and showcasing Monet's timeless mastery of capturing the essence of a moment in time.

The application of this decoupage paper was very simple , applied with PVA glue on a plywood surface. The colour stayed true to paper before application . I used cling film to apply over ply wood , no wrinkles , very pleased with the result.
