The ship gained international fame after setting a remarkable sailing record between New York City and San Francisco during the California Gold Rush era. In 1854, it completed the journey in only 89 days and 8 hours, an extraordinary feat for a sailing vessel travelling around Cape Horn. This record stood for decades and cemented the ship’s reputation as one of the fastest clippers ever built. With a length of about 225 feet and a tonnage of roughly 1,782 tons, the Flying Cloud represented the peak of American clipper ship design.
