The plan view emphasises the structural layout of the hull, spars, yards, and rigging, revealing the careful balance of engineering that made such speed possible. The ship gained international fame after setting a remarkable sailing record between New York City and San Francisco during the California Gold Rush era. In 1854, it completed the journey in only 89 days and 8 hours, an extraordinary feat for a sailing vessel travelling around Cape Horn. This record stood for decades and cemented the ship’s reputation as one of the fastest clippers ever built. With a length of about 225 feet and a tonnage of roughly 1,782 tons, the Flying Cloud represented the peak of American clipper ship design.
