The conventional daisy flower is really a flower cluster known as a capitulum, which is made up of many individual flowers. There are two types of flower. The flowers on the circumference are usually bright and showy and are known as ray florets. These florets are usually sterile and their purpose is to attract pollinators. In the centre of each capitulum there is a large number of inconspicuous flowers. These are known as disc florets and are perfect flowers. Disc florets produce seeds. Mature seeds have sepals reduced to bristles, or spines known as pappus. Pappus are the hairy appendages seen on mature daisy flowers such as dandelions. The Pappus aid seed distribution. In this case the seeds are light and are dispersed by wind. The seeds of those species with barbed spines are dispersed by hitching a ride in the fur of animals, bugs and human clothing. The efficiency of seed dispersal, by daisies is the major reason for the successful spread of introduced daisies throughout the U.S. and Australia. Oddly enough, there is also a cut of meat, named "daisy". It's a small section of pork shoulder, usually smoked. the "daisy" weighs about 2 to 4 pounds. There was ALSO a television show, called "Don't Eat The Daisies"!! And one last thing. There is a term, "Pushing up daisies" which means to be dead and buried!
