The Races at Longchamp (Les Courses à Longchamp), painted by Édouard Manet in 1866 in oil on canvas, captures the finish of a horse race at Longchamp in the Bois de Boulogne near Paris. Instead of the conventional side view, Manet sends the jockeys and horses racing directly towards the viewer through a cloud of dust, with spectators lining the course. The compressed, head-on perspective turns a fashionable Parisian sporting spectacle into an unusually immediate image of speed and modern life.
