Egg Dance (by John Collier) Case-Mate iPhone Case

This design features a painting by the English artist John Collier (1850–1934). It shows a youthful, androgynous figure performing a difficult dance while blindfolded. The dancer is generally identified as Mignon, a female character from Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship", although her short dark tunic, tights and boyish appearance can make her look like a young man. Collier's painting was in fact referred to as Mignon in a contemporary account of the 1903 New Gallery exhibition. Mignon stands in the centre-right of the painting on a richly patterned carpet. A pale cloth is tied across her eyes, so she cannot see the eggs scattered around her feet. Her right arm is raised high above her head while her other arm bends outward, helping her to balance. Her legs cross closely as she carefully places one foot in front of the other. The pose gives the impression that she has been caught in the middle of a delicate movement. The eggs surrounding her create tension because one careless step could break them. On the left, a violinist sits cross-legged on the floor and plays while Mignon dances. He wears brown clothing, pale stockings and a large dark hat. His low, seated position contrasts with Mignon's tall, upright figure. This arrangement directs the viewer's attention towards the dancer while also showing that her movements are being guided by music. Goethe's description of Mignon's egg dance similarly has her arrange eggs on a carpet, blindfold herself and dance while a violinist plays. The room itself is simple, with a warm golden-brown wall behind the figures. Strong light creates large shadows on the wall, particularly around the violinist, making the scene feel dramatic and theatrical. The colourful patterns of the carpet contrast with Mignon's almost entirely dark costume. Her blindfold, careful posture and the fragile eggs make the scene feel tense, even though there is very little action in the background. Overall, "Egg Dance" presents Mignon as graceful but also unusual and mysterious. Her clothing and appearance are deliberately difficult to classify as traditionally masculine or feminine, which reflects the character described by Goethe. The viewer's attention is therefore drawn not only to whether she will avoid breaking the eggs, but also to the strange and ambiguous presence of the dancer herself. The original artwork was painted by John Collier in 1903.
