Michigan's Gerald Ford became president in 1974 upon Richard Nixon's resignation. He was appointed vice president after Spiro Agnew resigned. His pardon of Nixon probably led to his defeat in 1976 in a close race against Jimmy Carter. He is the only President of the United States who was elected neither President nor Vice-President.
