The hammer and sickle was used as part of the Soviet flag, and represented power and industriousness. Communism was built on Marxist ideologies and the notion that power should come from the workers who are most directly responsible for productivity and prosperity rather than a class of leaders and owners. Many argue that the ideas work in theory but not in practice, and that the biggest obstacle to a working communist society is human nature itself.
