They are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings which flap at high frequencies audible to humans. They hover in mid-air at rapid wing flapping rates, typically around 50 times per second, but possibly as high as 200 times per second. Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of any homeothermic animal. To conserve energy when food is scarce, they have the ability to go into a hibernation-like state.

The Zazzle cards are always beautifully done and these were no exception. I love these cards because, after over 70 years of collecting, I can fill in the gaps. I especially like the ones of UNESCO heritage sites, some of which are fairly obscure, and which have both photos and texts on them.
