About This Design

Identity First Language Key Ring

A design for people who prefer to use identity-first language; for example, "Deaf people" or "autistic girl". Identity-first language is a way of talking about disability that treats a disability as a personal identity, the same way "bisexual" or "American" is an identity. Many people feel that this type of language shows that a disability is part of them, not something they are afflicted with, and emphasises their place in a broader community.
