Jain Symbol for OM Ceramic Tree Decoration

Jain Symbol for OM Ceramic Tree Decoration

In Jainism, Om is considered a condensed form of reference to the Pañca-Parameṣṭhi, by their initials A+A+A+U+M. The Dravyasamgraha quotes a Prakrit line: oma ekākṣara pañca-parameṣṭhi-nāmā-dipam tatkathamiti cheta "arihatā asarīrā āyariyā taha uvajjhāyā muṇiyā" AAAUM (or just "Om") is one syllable short form of the initials of the five parameshthis: "Arihant, Asharira, Acharya, Upajjhaya, Muni". The Om/AUM symbol is used in ancient Jain scriptures to represent the Navakar Mantra, which is the most important prayer in the Jain religion. The Navakar Mantra honours the panch parmeshtis (or five supreme beings) in Jainism. Om (or Aum) (listen (help·info); Sanskrit: ॐ, ओम्, romanised: Ōṃ) is a sacred sound, syllable, mantra, and an invocation in Hinduism. Om is one of the most important symbols of Hinduism. It is variously said to be the essence of the supreme Absolute, consciousness, Ātman, Brahman, or the cosmic world. In Indic traditions, Om serves as a sonic representation of the divine, a standard of Vedic authority and a central aspect of soteriological doctrines and practices. The syllable is often found at the beginning and the end of chapters in the Vedas, the Upanishads, and other Hindu texts.
