Kinderdijk Netherlands Postcard

Kinderdijk, located in the municipality of Molenlanden within the province of South Holland, Netherlands, is a prominent village famous for its iconic complex of 19 windmills. These windmills, built around 1740, are a testament to Dutch hydraulic engineering and water management, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. They are arranged in two rows, lining the canals and providing a picturesque and historically significant landscape that draws visitors from around the world. The village itself is small, but its primary draw is the concentration of these beautifully preserved windmills within a scenic, polder environment. The windmills were constructed to drain the Alblasserwaard polder, pumping excess water into reservoirs and then into the river Lek. Walking or cycling paths wind through the area, offering close-up views of the structures and the tranquil waterways that characterise this unique Dutch cultural landscape.
