Madrid is a quirky ghost-town-turned-arts-colony located along the Turquoise Trail. Originally a coal-mining town, it sat abandoned for years before being rediscovered by artists and craftsmen in the 1970s.
The town is a colourful row of wooden company houses tucked into a narrow canyon. Approaching it from the hills, the horizon reveals a splash of bright, eclectic colours against the rugged, tawny desert landscape.
