Medea Brewing Her Potion – Tile

Medea Brewing Her Potion – Tile

This striking vintage illustration depicts Medea, the powerful sorceress of Greek mythology, captured in a dramatic moment as she prepares a magical potion over a blazing cauldron. The artwork, originally engraved by Richard Willes Maddox, was published in The Graphic, the famous 19th-century illustrated weekly newspaper known for its detailed engravings and dramatic storytelling imagery. The scene unfolds in a mysterious woodland ritual setting. Medea stands poised beside a smoking cauldron, sprinkling enchanted ingredients into the glowing brew. Behind her rise solemn statues and a shadowed forest altar, heightening the atmosphere of ancient magic and myth. At her feet lie ritual objects and remnants of sacrifice, emphasizing the darker power associated with Medea’s legendary spells. Medea is one of the most fascinating figures in classical mythology — a priestess of Hecate, master of potions, and central character in the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. This dramatic Victorian engraving captures the theatrical intensity and romantic fascination with mythology that characterized 19th-century illustrated journalism. Carefully enhanced and colorized from the original engraving, this artwork preserves the intricate linework while bringing new life to the scene. The result is a striking mythological image perfect for lovers of classical mythology, witchcraft imagery, antique illustrations, and dark romantic art. Ideal

Really nice image fixed to the tiles in my shower as a background to a soap dish. This was to hide the marks left by a broken soap dish. Just used tile adhesive and white grout. I think it looks good, almost like the drips are falling from the soap dish. No probs. Nice image.
