Mediterranean Steps, Gibraltar, Upper Rock Postcard

The Mediterranean Steps are a historic, challenging nature trail winding up the precipitous eastern cliffs of the Upper Rock of Gibraltar. Originally constructed by the British military as a communication path between defensive fortifications, the route climbs steeply from Jews' Gate up to O'Hara's Battery, the highest point on the Rock. It offers hikers a rugged, sun-drenched trek amidst wild native flora, dramatic limestone arches, and historic military outposts perched high above the sea. As walkers ascend the steep stone staircases clinging to the sheer rock face, they are treated to breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. On clear days, the sweeping vistas stretch across the Strait of Gibraltar to the distant peaks of the Moroccan coastline in North Africa. The trail is famed not only for its intense physical demands and spectacular coastal geology but also as a prime vantage point for observing migratory birds and the unique natural landscape of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
