Melk Abbey Austria Postcard

Melk Abbey is a spectacular Benedictine abbey overlooking the Danube River in Lower Austria. Founded in 1089, the current Baroque structure was built between 1702 and 1736 by architect Jakob Prandtauer, featuring a massive octagonal dome, brilliant yellow facade walls, and symmetric twin towers. The abbey houses an extraordinary mediaeval library with countless historic manuscripts and a breathtaking ceiling fresco by Paul Troger.
