This postcard features a vintage oil painting style interpretation of the Mock Turtle character from Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (1865). The creature is part turtle, part bovine calf. The Mock Turtle is a very sad character from the children's adventure story, and is depicted crying. Its name is taken from mock turtle soup, a dish that was popular in the Victorian period.
