Le mont Blanc, dans le massif du Mont-Blanc, est le point culminant de la cha�ne des Alpes. Avec une altitude de 4 810,45 m�tres il est le plus haut sommet d'Europe occidentale et le sixi�me sur le plan continental en consid�rant les montagnes du Caucase dont l'Elbrouz (5 642 m�tres) est le plus haut sommet. Il se situe entre le d�partement de la Haute-Savoie en France et la vall�e d'Aoste en Italie ; la fronti�re qui y passe est l'objet d'un litige entre les deux pays. Le sommet a depuis plusieurs si�cles repr�sent� un objectif pour toutes sortes d'aventuriers, depuis sa premi�re ascension en 1786. De nombreux itin�raires fr�quent�s permettent aujourd'hui de le gravir avec une pr�paration s�rieuse. Il est un objet de fascination dans de nombreuses �uvres culturelles.
