............................. One Saturday in 1531 at the beginning of December, an Indian named Juan Diego, went very early in the morning from the town where he lived to Mexico City to attend his catechism classes and hear Holy Mass. Upon reaching the hill called Tepeyac, he woke up and heard a voice calling him by his name. He climbed to the top and saw a Lady of superhuman beauty, whose dress was as bright as the sun, who with very kind and attentive words told him: "Juanito: the smallest of my children, I am the ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of the true God, for whom one lives, I earnestly desire that a temple be built here for me, so that in it I can show and lavish all my love, compassion, help and defence to all the inhabitants of this earth and to all who invoke me and in Trust me. Go to the Lord Bishop and tell him that I want a temple on this plain. Go and put all your effort into it". Returning to his town, Juan Diego met the Virgin Mary again and explained what had happened. The Virgin asked him to go again the next day to speak with the bishop and repeat her message to him. This time the bishop, after listening to Juan Diego, told him that he should go and tell the Lady to give him some sign that would prove that she was the Mother of God and that it was her will that a temple be built for her. On his return, Juan Diego found María and told her the facts. The Virgin commanded him to return the next day to the same place because she would give him her sign there. The next day Juan Diego could not return to the hill because his uncle Juan Bernardino was very sick. In the early morning of December 12, Juan Diego rushed to find a priest for his uncle because he was dying. Upon reaching the place where he was to meet the Lady, he preferred to take another path to avoid her. Suddenly Maria came out to meet him and asked him where he was going. The embarrassed Indian explained what was happening. The Virgin told Juan Diego not to worry, that his uncle would not die and that he was already healthy. Then the Indian asked him for the sign that he should take to the bishop. María told him to go up to the top of the hill where he found fresh Castilian roses and putting on the tilma, he cut as many as he could and took them to the bishop. Once before Monsignor Zumarraga Juan Diego unfolded his blanket, the roses fell to the ground and the tilma was painted with what is now known as the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Seeing this, the bishop took the holy image to the Main Church and built a hermitage in the place that the Indian had indicated. Pius X proclaimed her as "Patroness of all Latin America", Pius XI of all the "Americas", Pius XII called her "Empress of the Americas" and John XXIII "The Celestial Missionary of the New World" and "the Mother of the Americas". The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated in Mexico with great devotion, and the miracles obtained by those who pray to the Virgin of Guadalupe are extraordinary.
