Orejona Indians 1854-1869 George Catlin The Orejona Indians were Coahuiltecan Indians who lived near the Texas coast in the early 18th century. The term "Orejones" literally means "big ears" and comes from the custom of noble males wearing large plugs in their pierced earlobes as a badge of rank. George Catlin was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveller, who specialised in portraits of Native Americans in the American Frontier. Travelling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians.
