Paul Cezanne - Smoker

The Smoker (Homme à la pipe), painted between 1890 and 1892 in oil on canvas by French Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. A seated peasant leans on a table, resting his head on one hand while smoking a white clay pipe, his heavy pose and simple clothing giving the portrait an austere, grounded presence. The sitter is identified as Paulin Paulet, one of the local workers Cézanne used in several figure studies and in his Card Players compositions. Broad planes of muted colour build the body and interior without elaborate anecdotal detail. Behind him, a still-life canvas showing a dark bottle and fruit adds an unusual painting-within-a-painting element to the scene. The pipe, leaning pose and restrained palette turn an ordinary model into a deliberate study of mass, balance and human presence.
