Plane - Getting ready for a long flight 1919 Key Ring

Scene in color 1919 Original Title: NC-4 Location: Rockaway Beach, Long Island When you think about planes from the past, you may think about biplanes. Small planes used by 1-2 people, shooting at other planes, dog fights etc. I bet you weren't thinking of something like this! This is the NC-3 Curtiss flying boat (sometimes called the Nancy Boat). It was designed by Glenn Curtiss. It was designed to fly great distances, in 1919 in May, the crew was able to fly from New York state, to Lisbon Portugal in 19 days; resting now and then. The plane was designed to take off and land in the water. This was the first Trans-Atlantic flight from America to Europe. However their record was broken very fast by the Royal Air Force. They were able to make the same trip without stopping at all. (They even have statues and everything to remember it by). But these guys have a cool looking plane, that you can still find in a museum. If you were wondering how they started it, there is a shaft in the front of the engine, they used a crank from that side to start the thing up.
