The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on North Carolina's Outer Banks, with its distinctive black and white spiral stripes, contains over 1 million bricks and its light can be seen shining at over twenty miles out at sea under optimal conditions marking the treacherous shallows of the Diamond Shoals. Threatened by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, the light house it was relocated in a 1999-2000 project, placing it on safer ground 2,870 feet inland.
