In 18th century prints, the Pugs tended to be long and lean, while our modern breed are much squarer and compact with deep, well muscled, chests. Pugs coat colours are fawn or black. Pugs have ears that are typically described as "rose" or "button". Rose ears are smaller than button ears, and are folded with the front edge against the side of the head. The breed standard prefers the button style, although you’re as likely to see one as the other.
