The name rambutan is derived from the Malay / Indonesian word rambutan, meaning hairy. Rambutan trees grow naturally in Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia. They are closely related to several other edible tropical fruits including the lychee, longan, and mamoncillo.
