Red Squirrel | Hans Hoffmann Classic Round Sticker

Red Squirrel (1578) by Hans Hoffmann (c. 1545/1550–1591/1592) is a beautifully detailed wildlife study that captures the delicate features and natural character of a red squirrel. Seated upright on its hind legs, the little animal holds a small nut between its front paws, appearing absorbed in its snack. Its rich reddish-brown fur contrasts with the soft white markings across its chest and belly, while its large, bushy tail curls gracefully upward behind its body. Fine details in the fur, pointed ears, bright dark eyes, and delicate whiskers reveal Hoffmann’s extraordinary observational skill. Set against a simple, pale parchment background, the squirrel becomes the sole focus of the composition, allowing its natural form and expressive posture to stand out. Created using watercolor and gouache, the painting combines scientific precision with the warmth and charm of Renaissance animal illustration. Influenced by the celebrated natural studies of Albrecht Dürer, Hoffmann demonstrates the Renaissance fascination with nature, careful observation, and the beauty of the animal world.
