The Virgin Mary has long been lauded as the "Queen of Apostles" in recognition of her special relationship with this privileged college of saints. This title is also associated with her role in the miracle of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, and as such she is shown here with a tongue of fire over her head. Twelve small shields show the symbols of the apostles and St. Paul, with St. John, the sole disciple not to die a martyr's death, shown in green.
