Saint Anthony Guide Return Address Labels S.A.G.

The tradition of writing S.A.G. or St. Anthony Guide on packages or letters for safe delivery has its roots in a miracle in Spain in 1729. A wife in need of support from her husband on business in Peru placed a letter in the sleeve of the statue of St. Anthony in her local parish believing that he would deliver it. The next day, her letter was gone and in its place was a letter in response from her husband with gold coins in it. Her husband later told her that her letter was delivered to him by a Franciscan friar, and he gave this same friar his letter to deliver to her. The letter is preserved to this day in the church in Oviedo.
